Kokodama
You can see it a lot in current interior design trends: the Kokodama. A handmade sphere made of natural coconut fibres containing a beautiful plant. Hanging, lying or standing, the Kokodama provides a cheerful and sustainable home for various types of plants. The updated range is completely plastic-free, 99% natural, 100% biodegradable and waterproof! We visited the company Kokodama Plant to see what they do. Will you join us?
Fan of the coconut
The creators of the Kokodama, Monique Ouwerling and René van Kester, are fans of the coconut. Monique Ouwerling of Kokodama says: "The coconut is at the heart of everything we do. WE LIVE & LOVE KOKO! The coconut has an undeniable primal power. After all, the coconut palm is one of the oldest trees on Earth, and is also known as the 'Tree of Life'. For centuries it has provided humans with vital necessities. Food, drink, oil, shelter, clothing and wood: you can obtain all sorts of things from coconuts. The coconut has KOKOPOWER!"
Highly sustainable product
Kokodama is proud to present its updated handmade coconut fibre sphere. Completely plastic-free! 99% natural and 100% biodegradable. Monique says: "With the Kokodama 2.0, we have brought something special to the market. The concept contains no plastic and is 100% biodegradable. As nature lovers, we are keen to offer an alternative to the usual plastic pot, so that plant and pot together form a harmonious, organic whole. We have thereby also looked at ease of use."
Socially engaged
Craftsmanship and corporate responsibility are paramount. The Kokodama is handmade in Sri Lanka, where sales of the Kokodamas support the local economy. With every Kokodama sold, part of the proceeds go back to Sri Lanka where it is spent on children's education.
Work process
During our visit, co-owner Leon Prins shows us the production process. The coconut sphere are supplied ready-made from Sri Lanka. These spheres are filled with beautiful plants. Leon buys these plants direct from growers. The plants that are placed in the Kokodama are carefully selected by Leon. “Plant hunting is in our DNA. We are therefore constantly on the lookout for unusual plants, applications and shapes." After the plant is placed in the sphere, it is labelled, placed in the cardboard tray and ready to leave for the customer.
Kokopot
In 2023, Kokodama introduced the Kokopot. This product does not hang, but stands. It resembles a regular flower pot, but made of coconut fibre. The pot is 99% waterproof and still fully biodegradable. Kokoplant is thereby offering a unique, sustainable and natural alternative to the standard plastic plant pot.
Renewed line
Last January, another updated Kokodama line was introduced; a Kokodama 15cm where the bottom is flat and incorporates an updated natural inner pot. They keep innovating and moving with the market!
